Summary of report content

Healthwatch Derby undertook an enter and View report visit to Westside Nursing Home on 13 June 2016 to assess residents’ experiences, the quality of care, and the overall environment.

The report finds that the home was clean, light, airy, and well maintained, with facilities that were appropriate to the needs of residents and staff.

It notes that residents appeared clean, comfortable, and well cared for, while staff were observed to be caring, respectful, and attentive in their interactions.

The environment included accessible gardens, comfortable communal areas, and well-equipped bedrooms, along with clear information displays on care, activities, and services.
Residents had access to regular activities, healthcare services, and social events, which contributed positively to their wellbeing.

Survey results showed that residents generally felt happy, respected, and able to make decisions about their daily lives.

Staff reported that staffing levels were usually sufficient and that they felt supported and satisfied in their roles, although some indicated they did not always have enough time to complete their duties.

Visitors were highly positive about the home, stating they felt welcomed, supported, and satisfied with the care provided.

Examples of good practice included the use of sensor mats to monitor residents’ safety and a respectful process for acknowledging bereavement within the home.

The report made two recommendations: improving signage to indicate accessible entrance routes and replacing or improving the readability of the menu board.

The provider responded positively, confirming that both improvements had been completed following the visit.

Overall, the report concludes that Westside Nursing Home provided a positive, caring environment with high levels of satisfaction among residents, staff, and visitors, alongside minor areas for improvement.
