This Enter and View report reviews patient experiences and care delivery at West Middlesex University Hospital – Crane Ward, a specialist ward for older people living with frailty, dementia and complex health needs. Healthwatch Hounslow visited the ward to observe the care environment, speak with staff and visitors, and assess how well the service supported patients' health, wellbeing and dignity.
The visit found a clean, welcoming and well-organised ward with strong arrangements for patient safety, discharge planning and multidisciplinary working. Staff and relatives spoke positively about communication, personalised care and efforts to involve families in decision-making. The report also highlighted a wide range of activities for patients, good support for people with additional communication needs, and a culture of treating people with dignity and respect. However, staff noted ongoing recruitment challenges and pressures relating to workforce shortages.
Healthwatch Hounslow concluded that Crane Ward provided high-quality, person-centred care and demonstrated many examples of good practice. The report recommended encouraging more patients and relatives to provide feedback to support continued service improvement and ensure patient experiences continue to inform care delivery.
