Enter and view: Watson House Care Home

Healthwatch Blackpool carried out an Enter and View visit to Watson House Care Home, a nine-bed residential care home supporting people who may have experienced self-neglect, social isolation or difficulties living independently. Feedback from residents was overwhelmingly positive, with people describing staff as caring, supportive and approachable. Residents reported feeling safe, happy and settled, and valued the help they received with everyday tasks, medication, finances and maintaining their independence. 

Residents described having active and varied lives, with opportunities to socialise, go on outings, spend time with family and pursue their own interests. Activities were largely resident-led and tailored to individual preferences, including trips out, bingo, puzzles, television, exercise and social events. Food was also highly rated, with residents praising the quality, variety and flexibility of meal choices, including accommodation of dietary requirements. 

Healthwatch observed positive interactions between staff and residents and found the atmosphere warm, relaxed and family-oriented. The home was clean and well maintained, with residents encouraged to personalise their bedrooms. Strong staff retention, flexible visiting arrangements, attention to oral health and a personalised approach to care were identified as key strengths.

Overall, residents were satisfied with the care and support they received and spoke positively about the sense of community within the home. Recommendations focused on increasing engagement with families and friends, regularly reviewing activity preferences, and considering access to additional wellbeing and psychological support where required.
