Summary of report content

Healthwatch North Lincolnshire conducted an Enter and View visit to Ward 27 at Ward 27 at Scunthorpe General Hospital on the 5th June 2024 to assess the quality of care, patient experience, and staff support. Ward 27 is an orthopaedic trauma ward. Healthwatch engaged with patients, staff, and management to gather feedback. The Enter and View visit was carried out in response to negative feedback received about Ward 27. Healthwatch Lincolnshire spoke to 12 patients and 6 staff members

Key findings:

  • Patients were generally positive about the care received, with praise for staff attentiveness and professionalism. However, some patients noted long waiting times for assistance, particularly during busy periods.
  • Family members appreciated the care provided but raised concerns about communication regarding treatment plans and discharge procedures.
  • Staff reported enjoying their roles and feeling supported by colleagues, though some mentioned staff shortages leading to increased pressure.
  • Observations showed staff working hard to meet patient needs, but there were concerns about delayed responses to call bells due to staffing levels. The ward environment was clean and well-maintained.
  • The ward was busy and at full capacity.
  • Staff interactions with patients were observed, with some providing reassurance and care, but general engagement was limited to treatment and medication.
  • Some patients were not supported with hydration, and there were delays in responding to toileting needs.

Recommendations:

  • Improve communication with patients and families regarding treatment plans and discharge procedures.
  • Review staffing levels to ensure timely responses to patient needs.
  • Consider additional training to support staff in managing high-demand periods.
  • Explore alternative ways to reduce patient waiting times for assistance.

Service provider response:

Lincoln County Hospital acknowledges the findings and is committed to addressing the concerns raised. Actions include reviewing staffing arrangements, enhancing communication strategies, and exploring ways to improve response times to patient requests.
