Healthwatch Redbridge conducted an Enter and View visit at Wanstead Place Surgery in September 2017 as part of the local Healthwatch programme of Enter and View visits to GP Practices in Redbridge to evaluate whether providers are adequately supporting people with communication impairments to use their services. Healthwatch also reviewed the GP website for accessibility.
Enter and View representatives engaged with four service users and one Receptionist and made observations in order to make the recommendations contained in the report. Observations made outside the premises found there was no accessible parking, but there was a ramp to the building and clear signage. Inside the premises, information on the noticeboard and signage was clear. A complaints/compliments procedure was available. Staff had a lack of training on how to support patients who have a hearing impairment.
A total of 10 recommendations were made in the following key areas: accessibility of the practice website, availability of sign language and interpreter resources to assist staff in communicating effectively with patients, staff training and provision of alternative formats.
Wanstead Place Surgery responded positively to the report and have actioned, or made plans to action, all the recommendations.
