Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cornwall undertook an enter and view visit to Trewartha Residential and Nursing Home on 8 December 2025. The purpose of the visit was to observe the service, speak with residents and staff, and understand how care is experienced, with a view to identifying both good practice and areas for improvement.

Overall, the home was found to provide a calm, clean, and generally positive environment. Interactions between residents and staff were observed to be respectful, friendly, and unhurried, and residents were seen engaging in activities such as crafts and social events. The home offered a range of facilities, including communal areas, a garden, an activity programme, and access to external outings.

Residents gave mixed feedback. Some residents said they were happy, described staff as kind, and praised the food and activities. However, there were concerns raised about staffing levels, with one resident reporting that there were sometimes too few staff available. Other issues included noise disturbances from other residents and minor frustrations with room preferences not always being respected.

Staff feedback was largely positive. Staff reported strong teamwork, good management support, and access to training. They expressed pride in the quality of care provided and described the home as a good place to work. Management also reported stable staffing, no reliance on agency staff, and good relationships with local healthcare providers, although they noted challenges accessing some NHS services quickly.

Despite the overall positive atmosphere, several issues were identified during observations. These included difficulties finding and accessing the home due to poor signage, safety risks such as a leaking conservatory floor, and information governance concerns where confidential material was not securely stored. There were also inaccuracies in displayed information, such as incorrect dates on menus, which could be confusing for residents with dementia.

The report makes several recommendations to improve safety, accessibility, and quality of care. These include improving signage and directions, addressing maintenance and safety hazards promptly, ensuring secure storage of sensitive information, reviewing staffing levels, improving the accuracy of displayed information, and considering accessibility improvements such as disabled parking.

The provider responded to the recommendations by outlining actions taken or planned, such as addressing maintenance issues, reinforcing procedures around secure storage, reviewing staffing levels, and improving daily checks. In some cases, the provider explained constraints, such as limited space preventing the addition of disabled parking bays.
