This report is a summary of Healthwatch Somerset’s visit to the Diagnostic Centre at Blackbrook in Taunton. The visit was part of a Healthwatch England project on Diagnostic Centres across England. Healthwatch Somerset did three separate visits on different days and times, carrying out 32 interviews whilst there, and completing an audit on the accessibility of the site.
The Centre has been open since 2021 and offers MRI, CT, Ultrasound and X-ray. It is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm. In January 2024, the centre saw over 2000 NHS patients.
The report states that overall people emphasised how positive the experience had been. Mainly this was due to the environment and caring attitude of the staff. People found the location convenient, especially when driving, and that staff felt organised and appointments on time. People were impressed with how quickly they got their appointment after referral.
The report has three recommendations.
- Continue to offer appointments there, as people spoke highly of the Centre and hoped to have future appointments there.
- Consider acquiring some higher-level chairs in the waiting room for people with mobility issues.
- Ensure that people receive clear information about travelling in advance of their appointment.
