Healthwatch Cornwall undertook an enter and view report to Tanglewood Residential Care Home on 3 November 2025. The purpose of the visit was to observe the service, speak with residents, relatives, and staff, and assess the quality of care and overall experience within the home.
Overall, the visit found that the home provided a calm, clean, and well-maintained environment with positive interactions between staff and residents. Tanglewood is a small residential care home supporting up to three adults with learning disabilities and is part of the Greenlight PBS organisation. Although it had not yet been inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), other homes in the group have been rated as good.
Observations showed that the home was modern, well-equipped, and designed to support residents’ needs, with personalised bedrooms and appropriate adaptations. Residents appeared comfortable, engaged in activities, and supported by attentive staff providing one-to-one care. However, access to the building included steps without a wheelchair ramp, which could limit accessibility.
Feedback from a resident and a relative was very positive. The relative praised the person-centred approach, particularly during the transition into the home, and highlighted that staff were caring, respectful, and tailored support to individual needs. Activities were valued, especially outdoor pursuits, although limited funding was noted as a constraint.
Staff feedback was also highly positive. Staff described the organisation as supportive, with strong training, good teamwork, and high morale. Recruitment and retention were not identified as issues, although funding constraints were again raised as a challenge for providing a wider range of activities.
The report made several recommendations to improve the service. These included introducing wheelchair access, addressing funding limitations for activities, reducing delays in filling vacancies, and ensuring timely maintenance repairs.
In response, the provider welcomed the positive findings and confirmed actions had already been taken or planned. These included repairing a damaged window, arranging a portable ramp for accessibility, progressing a new resident placement, and advocating for improved funding for activities through local authorities.
