Healthwatch Rochdale carried out a programme of announced Enter and View visits at nine local care homes from June 2018 - February 2019. The programme of visits followed a public consultation with Rochdale residents who informed us that they wanted our area of work to focus on nursing and residential homes in the borough. The Enter and View visits were based on eight care quality indicators developed by Independent Age. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 residents, 16 family members and 48 staff alongside observations throughout the care home visits.
The Enter and View visits found that there was variation in the range of activities offered as some homes provided activities that were well tailored to individual interest and preferences whereas others offered an unvaried schedule. The findings also suggested that the care homes were not always effective in showing how feedback from residents and visitors could influence changes within the home. Furthermore, when the Enter and View representatives spoke to staff members, the majority did not always display a good knowledge, nor could they provide comprehensive information when asked.
A total of 47 recommendations were made to the homes and these were based on the eight quality care indicators.
Four care homes responded to the recommendations made in the individual reports.
Healthwatch Rochdale will continue the Enter and View programme with an additional 9 visits to local care homes during May 2019 and March 2020.
