Summary of report content

Healthwatch Liverpool carried out an Enter and View visit to St Joseph’s Care Home in August 2015. The home provides residential care for adults with acquired brain injuries, neurological conditions and physical disabilities. Overall, the visit found a positive atmosphere, experienced staff and residents who appeared well cared for. The building was observed to be clean, spacious and purpose-built, with accessible facilities including en-suite wet rooms, adapted bathrooms and attractive communal spaces.

Healthwatch observed positive interactions between residents and staff and received very positive feedback from relatives. Family members described staff as caring, responsive and proactive in addressing concerns. Relatives felt involved in care planning and reviews, praised communication from the home and highlighted improvements in their family members’ quality of life since moving there. Staff also spoke positively about their work, describing satisfaction in helping residents progress and maintain independence.

The home offered a varied programme of activities, including games, films, afternoon teas and community outings. Residents were involved in decisions about activities and trips, and a shared minibus enabled outings such as visits to Blackpool. The chef described providing freshly prepared meals with options tailored to individual dietary needs, including specialist diets where required. Residents and relatives spoke positively about the food and flexibility around mealtimes and preferences.

Healthwatch concluded that St Joseph’s Care Home provided a high standard of care within a supportive environment. The only recommendation was to ensure that equipment temporarily stored in communal sitting areas was tidied away. No safeguarding concerns were identified during the visit, and overall feedback from residents, relatives and staff was highly positive.
