Healthwatch Wigan and Leigh conducted an Enter and View visit to St Georges Nursing Home in December 2018. Semi structured interviews and questionnaires were used to gather feedback from 12 members of staff, 9 residents and 7 visitors Observations were made by the representatives to support this feedback.
Observations included: the home was clean and tidy and staff interacted with residents in a friendly and positive manner. Residents reported that there were opportunities to take part in meaningful activities; the meals were sometimes repetitive but mealtimes were flexible; and that they were well cared for with their individual needs catered for. Visitors were happy with the service and care provided but some reported issues with the management. Staff reported they were happy working at the home and that there were training opportunities available to them, although they commented that staffing levels could be improved.
Recommendations made by the Healthwatch representatives included: consider offer a wider choice for mealtimes; management be more self-aware in the way they communicate with visitors; and review how the home meets individual needs and offer choice.
The service provider responded in detail and implied that actions had been completed and were in progress to resolve the issues.
