Summary of report content

In May 2017, Healthwatch Somerset carried out an Enter and View visit to Somerset Court, a residential service operated by the National Autistic Society for autistic adults. The visit formed part of a wider programme examining how people with learning disabilities and autism are supported to exercise choice and control in their daily lives. Healthwatch toured a number of residential houses, observed support being provided and spoke with staff and residents where possible.

The visit found people were supported with dignity and respect and that staff made significant efforts to personalise support and living environments according to individual needs and preferences. Healthwatch identified examples of good practice, including person-centred support planning, customer involvement in menu planning, sensory environments and measures to support independence and wellbeing. Recommendations included creating more opportunities for community involvement, exploring ways to share good practice across different houses, supporting independent living skills and making improvements to communal spaces. The National Autistic Society responded positively to the recommendations and outlined actions already underway, including service development work, staff learning initiatives and plans to improve facilities and opportunities for customers.
