Summary of report content

Representatives from Healthwatch visited the Discharge Lounge at Scunthorpe General Hospital. Visits were made over a period of 7 days and at different times during the day.

The main purpose of the visit was to gather feedback from patients, families and visitors about their experiences of using the Discharge Lounge. Hospital staff were given an opportunity to have their say about the service and the general care provided. Representatives also observed the routine of the Discharge Lounge.

During the Enter and View visits, a total of 16 people were interviewed. The following areas were considered: environment, care, information, safety, belongings, medication, transport, clothing and staff.

The key findings showed that all 16 respondents were satisfied with their care and felt ready to be discharged. They confirmed that all their belongings and medications were returning home with them. However, information to patients, their families, friends and carers about discharge was inconsistent and there were issues regarding the transport service.

Recommendations were made to the Trust about the patient transport service. They were also advised to implement a standard approach to ensure that all patients discharged know who to contact if they have questions regarding their hospital stay.

The Trust drafted an action plan to address the issues raised indicating who would take responsibility and a timescale. This is included in the report.
