Sarnett House is a small six-bedded residential care home for people with learning and physical disabilities and an age range of 30 – 60 years.
The purpose of the visit by Healthwatch Havering (HWH) was to ensure that services delivered are acceptable and that safety of the residents is not compromised in any way.
The manager and small team of staff were trained in mandatory elements of care appropriate to the needs of the group. All residents were subject to Deprivation of Liberties statements too. Staff training had been carried out on assessments with particular emphasis on the best interests of the residents and their support plans which are reviewed regularly.
Following a comprehensive visit it was recommended that the manager’s office be signposted, the chair in the office repaired or replaced as it appeared to be a fire hazard. Similarly the desk needed attention. It was further suggested that the bed in the manager’s office be replaced with a sofa bed to acknowledge the dual use of the room as an office and sleep in facility.
Following the report the unit manager advised HWH that the recommendations have been actioned.
