Summary of report content

Healthwatch Shropshire conducted an Enter and View on Meadowbrook Care Home, run by Four Seasons Ltd, with 69 beds spread over three distinct units. The visit occurred on the on 20th January 2017.

This visit was arranged as part of a follow up schedule to care homes that had been identified as requiring improvements in overall standards. This was a semi-announced visit, with the home manager being given written notification that a visit would take place in January 2017.

Observations by the Enter and View representatives report that:

The Environment. The Mary Powell unit is for the frail and elderly, Garrett Anderson unit is for people with severe dementia and the Agnes Hunt unit is a specialist unit for younger people with neurological and physical disabilities. Overall the purpose build home had public and communal areas that were bright and colourful . Bedrooms on the whole were functional with some being more personalised with pictures, photos and decorative items.

Quality of care: residents appeared to be provided with a choice of meals of sufficient quantity and quality; a range of planned activities were provided in each unit; those residents able to express their views stated that the staff are flexible, helping them to get up at the time they choose, and to wash and get dressed.

Despite occasional staff shortages the residents able to give their views were generally positive about the quality of care provided. The interaction seen between staff and residents was caring and knowledgeable but this involved mostly functional activities. very little social interaction was observed between staff and residents.

A number of recommendations have been made to which the Manager of Meadowbrook responded and provided an action plan for putting recommendations in place.
