Healthwatch Shropshire conducted an Enter and View on Ellesmere Community Nursing Home, a nine bedded Charitable Trust accommodation, on 26 September 2016.
This visit was arranged as part of Healthwatch Shopshire’s Enter and View schedule and was semi-announced. The manager did not know the date or time of the visit. Three Healthwatch Shropshire authorised representatives conducted the visit with the aim of observing the quality of care and treatment experienced by service users with regard to Dignity, Choice and Respect.
Observation by the Enter and View representatives reported that: staff were present and on hand in communal areas and they communicated with residents and one another well, the home was clean and tidy; a total of 32 general observations were made with 28 being positive and 4 passive; a total of 27 resident engagements were made with 25 positive and 2 passive. One negative observation was that the last newsletter on the home’s website was over a year ago.
The report made a number of recommendations including: staff could make it easier for residents to go outside; signs are used to make clear how visitors access the home; a complaints procedure is introduced; exercise sessions should be offered; residents’ activities should be promoted with nominated staff having responsibility for this and that photographs of staff members be displayed.
The Manager of the home responded positively to the report and formed an action group to implement the identified actions.
