Summary of report content

Healthwatch Barking and Dagenham conducted an unannounced Enter and View visit to Queens Hospital's Sunrise A&B Wards, on 19 February 2014.

This was an unannounced to review the progress of an action plan agreed and put in place by Queens Hospital, based on recommendations, put forward by Healthwatch Barking and Dagenham, from their previous visit to the wards. During the visit, Healthwatch Authorised Representatives spoke with patients, their relatives and senior nursing staff on duty to explore how the improvements had impacted their experience.

Overall, Healthwatch Barking and Dagenham Authorised Representatives felt this was a positive return visit as most of the recommendations put forward from the first visit have been put in place or are ongoing. There were positive comments made by patients and relatives who had noticed changes since previous admissions.

There concerns were raised by some patients about response times when using the call buzzer system and also issues around communication from some doctors and consultants about treatment and medication changes. However, the report notes that information and feed back received from other patients indicates there is positive progress being made in both areas.

The report concludes that the Hospital Trust should continue to monitor progress of these issues to ensure they do not have a negative impact on patient and visitor experiences.
