Healthwatch Telford and Wrekin undertook an Enter and View visit to the Princess Royal Hospital Ward 4 which provided a team of specialist healthcare professionals serving patients in need of Trauma services and Orthopaedic treatments for a wide range of bone and soft-tissue injuries including elderly people’s falls injuries treatments. Their aim was to find out if patients were treated with dignity, had their privacy respected, if staff respond appropriately and with compassion to meet healthcare needs, how people living with dementia were being cared for and patients’ experience of discharge from the hospital.
The report found that patients felt they received a good standard of care from all the staff on the ward; staff were kind and respected their dignity; staff had brought their team together and gave the patients a sense of belonging to a family; patients with dementia were looked after by dementia lead nurse and their team which enhanced the patient experience of living well in a hospital environment; and staff kept patients informed about their care and the discharge process.
The report recommended the providers to investigate how patients with dementia may be helped to fund their TV provision needs; ensured patients and/or their relatives were informed about Concessionary Parking scheme and were offered this when appropriate; and explored how they could share their experiences with other wards on the journey to achieve the Gold Exemplar Ward Standard. The providers responded to all the recommendations and ensured they would be met.
