Summary of report content

Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin conducted a partially announced Enter and View visit to Princess Royal Hospital. They reviewed Ward 10, which cared for patients with frail and complex conditions. As part of their engagement programme, Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin has visited several Wards and Departments/Units/Clinics in Princess Royal and Royal Shrewsbury Hospitals since 2014.

The observations made in the report showed that staff were caring and compassionate towards patients and treated them with respect. Doll/Teddy therapy was used to support those with dementia as it provided a form of comfort to patients. The signs were clear and dementia friendly although some facilities were not consistently implementing dementia supporting practices. However, information about discharge matters were not always effectively communicated to patients and their relatives/carers.

A number of recommendations were made in the report. These included that the Alzheimer's "This is me" document should be completed by visitors; review ways to implement "Johns Campaign"; ensure staff provide visitors with a parking passport; continue to implement environmental improvements to the ward to support those with dementia; improve communication between staff, visitors and patients to address concerns and discharge details; and to explore recruitment of volunteers to support patients with dementia in the ward.

The service provider responded positively and addressed the issues in the report.
