Healthwatch Telford and Wrekin conducted a partially announced Enter and View visit to the Elective Orthopaedic Ward at Princess Royal Hospital on 10th July 2019. 7 patients and 3 staff members provided feedback.
Patients reported that they were treated with dignity and respect during their stay. There was a mixed response about discharge information as some were informed and some were not aware of their date of discharge. The Ward Manager reported that their discharge rate was improving so patients could be discharged within two to three days, it depended on their recovery following their surgery. Staff were observed to be polite and respectful to patients and patients spoke about staff in a positive manner.
Three recommendations were made including that reasons for canceling operations should be clearly communicated to the patients; and share how timely discharge plans work with other wards.
The service provider responded to this report.
