Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin conducted an Enter and View visit to the Princess Royal Hospital in June 2019. Four patients and three staff members gave their feedback of the service.
The report found that the patients felt they were treated with dignity and respect. Patients reported that they had not had discussions about discharge. Staff told representatives that protocols for discharge varied and the process could be affected by hospital transport. The ward was clean and uncluttered. Parking for attending patients, and visitors, is a hospital issue, but there is a ‘drop-off and pick-up’ zone outside the Day Surgery Unit. Staff were compassionate and attentive to patients on the ward.
Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin made a number of recommendations including that a review of the mechanisms for provision of TV/radio/telephone for those inpatients admitted to the ward; Ensure in-patients are engaged in the discharge process and are kept informed as their treatment and care progresses; For those in-patients on the ward, re-design the patient information bedboard in line with other wards so relevant information is clear and available for all staff; and ensure agency staff are familiar with the ward procedures, the needs of inpatients including engaging with their patients
The service provider responded positively and detailed how to address the recommendations.
