Healthwatch Coventry carried out an enter and view visit to Phil Mead House on 28 March 2023 to gather feedback on residents’ experiences of living at the service and to assess the quality of care, support and the environment. During the visit, Healthwatch spoke with 11 residents, four relatives and seven members of staff, as well as making observations throughout the home.
The visit found that residents were positive about the care they received and described staff as kind, respectful and approachable. Healthwatch observed warm and supportive interactions between staff and residents and found that people were treated with dignity and encouraged to maintain as much independence as possible. Relatives also spoke positively about communication with staff and the quality of support provided.
Residents generally enjoyed the activities available and appreciated opportunities for social interaction. The home was found to be clean, comfortable and well maintained, with a welcoming atmosphere. However, some residents and relatives felt there could be more opportunities for trips and activities outside the home, and Healthwatch identified opportunities to further improve signage and information to support residents living with dementia.
Healthwatch concluded that Phil Mead House provided a caring and supportive environment where residents felt safe and valued. Recommendations focused on continuing to develop meaningful activities, increasing opportunities for community outings, and enhancing dementia-friendly features to further improve residents’ quality of life.
