Healthwatch Haringey undertook an enter and view visit to Peregrine House on 15 August 2016. Three authorised representatives visited the residential care home to assess residents’ experiences, the quality of care, activities, nutrition and the environment. The team spoke with seven residents and four members of staff during the visit.
The visit found that Peregrine House was clean, well maintained and welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere and positive relationships between staff and residents. Residents generally spoke positively about living in the home and praised the manager and staff for being approachable and supportive. Healthwatch observed that residents were treated with dignity and respect, and found evidence of detailed, person-centred care planning that involved residents and their families.
Residents had access to a range of activities, including bingo, exercise sessions, coffee mornings, shopping trips and outings, although some felt there should be more opportunities for social interaction and organised activities. While feedback on food was generally positive, some residents suggested changes to meal arrangements and menu choices. A small number of concerns were also raised about limited conversation between residents and delays in repairing a shower room, which had been out of use for an extended period.
The report concluded that Peregrine House provided good-quality care in a friendly and supportive environment. Healthwatch Haringey highlighted the commitment of the manager and staff and the positive experiences of residents. Recommendations included repairing the shower room, increasing the availability of books and activities, encouraging greater interaction between residents, and supporting residents to contribute more actively to residents’ meetings.
