Healthwatch Sheffield carried out an Enter and View visit to Park View Residential Care Home, a 60-bed dementia care home operated by Sanctuary Care. Overall, residents, relatives and staff were positive about the service. Residents described feeling safe and well cared for, while relatives praised the home’s atmosphere and quality of support. Healthwatch found a welcoming environment with good staff retention, helping residents build familiar and trusted relationships with carers.
The home was purpose-built and generally well maintained, with accessible layouts designed to support people living with dementia. Positive features included personalised memory boxes outside residents’ rooms, communal spaces designed to encourage social interaction and initiatives such as “Resident of the Day”, where individuals receive extra attention and a special dining experience. However, some areas, including carpets and the sensory room, were identified as needing refurbishment, and plans for improvements were already in place.
Residents were complimentary about the food, activities and opportunities for social engagement. Two activity coordinators provided a varied programme including arts and crafts, singing, cinema sessions, exercise activities and community visits. The home also welcomed local performers, choirs and schoolchildren. Staff were observed interacting warmly with residents and demonstrated a good understanding of individual needs and preferences. Access to healthcare professionals, including GPs, dentists, opticians and chiropodists, was described as well organised.
Healthwatch concluded that Park View provided a positive environment for residents living with dementia. Recommendations included involving residents and families in planned refurbishment projects, continuing the broad activities programme and introducing a “You Said, We Did” board to demonstrate how feedback from residents and relatives leads to improvements. The provider responded positively, confirming work on the sensory room refurbishment and plans to introduce the feedback board.
