Summary of report content

Healthwatch Warwickshire conducted an unannounced Enter and View visit to Orton Manor, a converted home with 36 residents, and 55-60 staff members, in response to concerns received about the standard of care provided at the home. The visit was facilitated by the manager who informed the team that the home was going through a refurbishment at that time.

The healthwatch team observed the interaction between the staff, residents and relatives and found them all to be respectful and friendly. Some concerns were found about : The use of communal bathrooms for storage of mobility aids and

incontinence pads storing hoists and mobility aids in communal corridors, the decoration of communal corridors and incorrectly coloured or tied up emergency pull cords in communal bathrooms and toilets.

The residents and relatives spoken to were happy with the service and care received. Every six months a Quality Assurance Questionnaire is produced for residents, relatives, staff and stakeholders. Other concerning issues were not finding enough car parking spaces for visitors resulting in them parking on the footpath, and dusty handrails around the home with cobwebs mainly by the first floor nurses station and by room 34. The residents appeared to be comfortable, clean and well dressed for the current weather conditions. The staff were happy working as they get good support, one member of staff said "it doesn't feel like job".

Residents said they feel "well looked after" and would definitely "recommend the home".

The report makes the following recommendations:

- The communal corridors throughout the home are given a timescale for refurbishment.

- The concerns raised around storage of hoists and mobility equipment in communal corridors; and storage of mobility equipment and incontinence pads in communal bathrooms are addressed.

- The emergency pull cords in all bathrooms (including resident’s en-suites) are checked to ensure that they are red in colour, are not tied up and reach the floor

A follow up visit was recommended in three months to follow up on the planned improvements discussed with the Registered Manager and Healthwatch Warwickshire’s recommendations.
