Healthwatch Blackburn with Darwen carried out an Enter and View visit to Oldfield House, an 18-bed care home providing support for older people, including those living with dementia, physical disabilities and sensory impairments. Overall, the home received a green rating and was found to be well maintained, clean and well managed. Representatives observed strong infection control measures, a welcoming atmosphere and a stable staff team who described the home as supportive, family-oriented and person-centred.
Staff spoke positively about management, training and teamwork, reporting that they had sufficient time to get to know residents and understand their individual preferences. Representatives observed warm and respectful interactions between staff and residents throughout the visit. The home made use of technology to help residents stay connected with family and provided a range of activities including exercise sessions, quizzes, games, reminiscence activities and celebrations. Residents also had access to newspapers, personalised interests and regular outings when circumstances allowed.
Food provision was generally viewed positively. Residents were offered menu choices in advance, alternatives were readily available and the chef demonstrated flexibility in accommodating individual preferences, including late breakfasts and special requests. During the lunchtime observation, staff provided patient and respectful support to residents who required assistance with eating. Many residents commented favourably on the quantity and quality of food available throughout the day.
Most residents reported positive experiences of living at Oldfield House, describing staff as caring and supportive. However, a small number raised concerns about missing personal belongings, room changes, limited activity opportunities, staffing levels and aspects of their care experience. Healthwatch also identified opportunities to make communal lounge areas feel more homely and noted some minor maintenance issues. The report recommended that the provider undertake a contemporary resident quality survey to better understand and address the concerns raised by a minority of residents, while recognising that overall standards of care and resident experience were good.
