Healthwatch are statutorily empowered to undertake Enter and Views [ Section 221 of Local Government and Public Involvement Act 2007 ].
This Report is based on a second follow-up visit to an all male short-term Mental Health Hospital Ward in 2017 [ Goodmayes – Healthwatch Havering]. Since the initial visit the occupancy rate has increased and this is reflected in more staff on the Ward [ Nursing, Psychology , OT and Bank staff ] who work in partnership with Community Teams and Psychiatric personnel. Various intervention programmes and activities are implemented with patients on an inclusive and participatory basis. All Patients have a comprehensive Care Plan with a Rehabilitation focus. Policies and procedures are adhered to in terms of Safeguarding and the risk and safety of Patients .
Healthwatch Havering made some recommendations but the Enter and View was not based on consultation with either Staff or Patients [ Observation only ] : It includes the use of water on the Ward; clarification about use of exercise areas and procedure; Other garden facilities or resources for Patients and the height of fencing surrounding the Hospital; The interior decor of the Ward which is being upgraded during the Enter and View Visit. The latter has caused some concern re: data protection and confidentially of Patient Files which were not in locked cabinets. This was noted by the Hospital Trust Authorities.
