Summary of report content

In February 2020, Healthwatch Somerset carried out an unannounced Enter and View visit to Oake Meadows Care Home in Taunton. The visit included discussions with residents, relatives, staff and management, alongside observations across the home's residential, nursing, dementia and pathway-bed units. Healthwatch spoke with seven residents, six relatives or friends and a range of staff members.

The visit found a welcoming, person-centred environment where residents were supported to maintain choice, independence and social connections. Residents and relatives praised staff, activities and the quality of care, while Healthwatch highlighted examples of flexible support, personalised activities and strong links with healthcare professionals. Recommendations included developing volunteer schemes, further improving the environment within the pathway-bed unit, strengthening orientation aids for residents living with dementia and providing clearer information for new residents and families. The provider responded positively and reported that improvements to the pathway unit had already been made following the visit.
