Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cheshire East undertook an Enter and View visit to Newton Court Care Home in Middlewich on 29 June 2026. Overall, the home was found to provide a caring environment, with residents generally appearing comfortable and well looked after. The manager demonstrated a willingness to listen to feedback and was actively exploring improvements to resident experience, communication and activities.

Residents and relatives spoke positively about the food, activities, companionship and the kindness of many permanent staff. The home maintained links with the local community, provided a varied programme of activities and involved residents in initiatives such as a food focus group and activity planning. Healthwatch also identified positive plans to introduce regular listening sessions for residents and relatives and develop quieter communal spaces.

However, a number of concerns were raised by residents and relatives. These included delays in responding to toileting requests and call bells, inconsistent care from agency staff, limited staff visibility in communal areas, noise levels within the home and concerns about stimulation and meaningful engagement for some residents. Healthwatch also identified issues with lunchtime organisation, aspects of the environment including worn flooring and outdoor maintenance, and the impact of lift breakdowns on residents’ ability to access activities and outdoor spaces.

Overall, Healthwatch concluded that there were positive aspects of care at Newton Court, but that improvements were needed to ensure a more consistently person-centred experience. Recommendations focused on enhancing resident stimulation, improving mealtime arrangements, strengthening responses to toileting and call bell requests, creating quieter communal areas, improving the environment and ensuring outdoor spaces remain safe, accessible and well maintained.
