Healthwatch Newham conducted an Enter and View visit at Newham General Hospital in June 2017 to review the food and meal time support that was offered to patients at the Hospital. The rationale for this being that the quality, quantity and presentation of food and appropriate hydration in hospital plays an important part in patients’ recovery.
Enter and View representatives observed activity on 4 wards and engaged with 32 patients.
The report references many examples of staff providing care and support to patients, showing kindness and patience and also checking that meal time was working well. Although patients on the different wards will be at different stages of recovery and have different support needs, observation and patient feedback identified 6 key recommendations:
- To review and enforce the protected meal time policy
- To make all patients aware of the availability of food, snacks and water
- To ensure meal options reflect differing cultural requirements or needs
- To review food ordering processes to better support patient choice
- To ensure all patients are receiving necessary support and assistance with eating
- To enforce patient adherence to good hand hygiene and provided with wipes if needed
The Hospital responded positively to the report and have actioned or outlined plans to implement all Recommendations made.
