Enter and view: Neville House Care Home, Gargrave

Healthwatch North Yorkshire carried out an Enter and View visit to Neville House in Gargrave on 30 August 2018. Overall, the home was found to provide a good standard of care in a welcoming, homely and community-focused environment. Residents appeared well cared for, felt safe and were positive about the support provided. The home maintained strong links with the local community, with regular involvement from schools, volunteers and local groups.

Residents praised staff, activities and food, describing staff as friendly, helpful and approachable. The home offered a range of activities including outings, bingo, gardening projects and visits from animals. Healthwatch also noted positive use of telemedicine, which enabled residents to access medical advice quickly and helped avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. 

Staff spoke positively about their roles and the supportive culture within the home. Healthcare provision was well established, with regular visits from GPs, district nurses, dentists, chiropodists and opticians. Healthwatch also observed recent efforts to make the environment more dementia-friendly, including improved colour schemes, signage and the appointment of dementia champions.

Healthwatch concluded that Neville House was delivering caring, person-centred support with high levels of resident satisfaction. Recommendations focused on continuing to improve dementia-friendly features, particularly through clearer signage and environmental adaptations, and increasing the number of staff trained to support residents living with dementia.
