Healthwatch Cheshire West conducted an Enter and View visit to Morningside Rest Home on 28 March 2014.
Morningside was originally a large family home which has been extended and added to over the years and is now able to accommodate 31 residents, although the report notes that the layout resembles a rabbit warren due to the numerous extensions.
The manager informed the visiting team that they had been in post for around six months and were currently working with Cheshire West and Chester Council to address many contact compliance issues. The Authorised Representatives saw evidence of managerial changes to practice and were told of the work in progress, these included all staff having Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) checks,
references are received before taking up employment, introduction of infection colour-coding, introduced nutritional assessments, weight monitoring and care plan reviews. The manager also advised that she carries out annual appraisal and personal development planning for staff.
Medicines are kept in a locked room and controlled drugs are kept in this room in a locked cabinet. It was noted by Authorised Representatives that this room is also used as the hairdressing salon.
There was evidence of a variety of interesting and meaningful activities and the Home planes to employ a second activities coordinator in order to provide a seven day a week programme. However one resident spoken to became distressed when telling the Healthwatch Cheshire West team that she can no longer afford the wheelchair transport she requires to go out and had, as a result, become homebound.
Residents stated they would like more input regarding their meals but expressed concern that it may increase their fees.
There were a number of recommendations made in the report, including the need to ensure all staff are aware of fire evacuation procedures, and a suggestion that care needs to be taken with presentation or meals - in particular the use of appropriate plates and tableware.
There was no provider response included within the report.
