Healthwatch Milton Keynes undertook an unannounced enter and view visit to Milton Court Care Home on 23 November 2022 following a request from Milton Keynes Council after their compliance visit raised concerns. Healthwatch Milton Keynes wanted to understand residents’ experience of the care they received. They spoke to 23 residents, seven of which were accompanied by family or friends.
They found that:
The building was clean, well decorated and had a good range of facilities
Staff were busy cleaning, updating notes and undertaking medication rounds. Whilst most observations were caring and compassionate, staff seemed to be too busy with these tasks to spend much time with residents. Some families were concerned that their loved ones were rarely out of bed or dressed when they visited. Less mobile residents told Healthwatch that care staff rarely offered the choice of whether to get up or not.
Personal hygiene also seemed to be an issue for residents with limited mobility, including how often their continence pads were changed, they were washed or had their teeth cleaned. They also seemed to have fewer opportunities to socialise with other residents as they would have liked.
Residents were satisfied with the quality and amount of food provided and the range of activities on offer.
The report contains seven recommendations about staffing, personal hygiene, isolation, welcoming new residents and cleaning,
