Summary of report content

Healthwatch Luton undertook an announced/unannounced Enter and View visit to Marlin Lodge, a residential care home in Luton, on 27 January 2026. Marlin Lodge is managed by Quality Care (Surrey) Limited and provides accommodation for up to 15 adults with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum conditions and, in some cases, dementia, across two adjoining properties.

The purpose of the visit was to understand the experiences of residents, families and staff as part of Healthwatch Luton’s wider work to hear from underrepresented groups using residential and community-based care services. The visit was partially announced and involved observations of the environment and care, as well as conversations with four residents, four staff members and one family member.

Overall, the report presents a positive picture of the service. The home was observed to be calm, welcoming, clean and well maintained, with spacious communal areas, accessible outdoor space and appropriate adaptations such as a lift and wheelchair access. The environment was described as homely, personalised and safe, with no visible hazards identified.

Residents spoke positively about living at Marlin Lodge and reported feeling safe, respected and listened to. They described staff as friendly, approachable and caring, and interactions observed during the visit were respectful and unhurried. Staff were seen responding promptly to residents’ needs and supporting independence and choice in daily routines.

Staff members reported a supportive and positive team culture, regular supervision and ongoing training. They stated that management was approachable and that communication within the team was good. A family member also shared positive feedback, noting significant improvements in the quality of care and communication under the current management.

Residents were observed engaging in a range of individual and shared activities, including puzzles, music, exercise sessions, gardening and spending time with visitors. The report highlights a flexible and person-centred approach to activities, with residents supported to pursue their own interests and preferences.

The dining experience was described as relaxed and informal. Residents spoke positively about the quality and choice of food, and staff demonstrated awareness of individual dietary needs. While menus were discussed with residents, no displayed or easy-read menus were observed during the visit.

The report concludes that Marlin Lodge provides a supportive, person-centred environment that promotes dignity, wellbeing and independence. However, it identifies opportunities to strengthen practice by developing more visible and structured resident feedback mechanisms, ensuring dietary and cultural preferences are consistently documented, and making menus available in accessible formats.

In its response, the service provider welcomed the findings and confirmed that structured resident meetings, key worker sessions, surveys and person-centred care planning are already in place. The provider also confirmed that accessible menus are available and committed to reviewing menu displays and continuing service improvement.
