Healthwatch Wirral conducted an Enter and View visit in September 2018 to Mariners Park Care Home. The home provides residential and nursing care for up to 32 people, including those with dementia.
The report found that there was a range of activities and outings for residents, including a pamper day with a dementia friendly barber. Staff are trained in mandatory courses and additional training is available. The home has a complaints procedure and staff, residents and their relatives are aware of this. Mariners Park monitors the quality of the service it provides by conducting audits, monthly care plan evaluations, mock CQC inspections by an external consultancy, resident and staff meetings and annual Health and Safety reviews. The physical environment of the home was clean, tidy and bright. Hand gel dispensers were available upon arrival and we were actively encouraged to use them. Additionally, staff appeared to enjoy their work and were at ease with the residents. Residents reported that they felt well looked after and that they were happy with the staffing levels. There was also mention of choice over food at mealtimes.
Healthwatch Wirral made recommendations including that Healthwatch leaflets should be displayed to gather feedback, IT link-up technology could be used when residents have difficulty accessing activities in other units, and the home should continue to invite residents to use the facilities and participate in activities.
