Healthwatch Bucks conducted an unannounced enter and view visit to Mandeville Grange Care Services on 18 November 2015. The home provides nursing care for residents, some of whom live with dementia. The team engaged with 4 residents and 3 relatives. The team did not speak with staff during the visit. This report is part of Healthwatch Buck’s wider enter and view project about dignity in care.
Feedback about the home was varied. The team found that staff spent a lot of time moving residents around and less time interacting more positively with them. The team observed the care staff hoisting residents into lounge chairs and reported that it did not appear dignified as their clothes were not always well adjusted. Privacy was raised as a concern by the team as they were able to see into residents’ rooms while they were still in bed. Relatives were concerned that staff did not encourage independence resulting in worsened mobility for a resident. The team did not observe an activity notice board, although they were informed that the residents had recently attended a boat trip and a visit from pets for therapy to the home which were appreciated by the residents. Menus were not displayed, however, the team observed residents being asked what they would like to eat. One relative told the team that they felt their relative was well cared for. The team observed the staff actions after a resident fall and noted that they cared for the resident with kindness.
The report made recommendations to the home including ensuring that the temperature of home is managed, ensuring the residents maintain their independence and mobility as much as possible, and to obtain another hoist as many residents were being moved in this way.
The service provider provided a response to the report. The home stated that they would discuss the recommendations.
