Healthwatch South Tyneside undertook an Enter and View visit to Lifeways Community Care on McAnany Avenue, South Shields, as part of the council’s quality assurance process for specialist care homes. The visit took place on 28 January 2026 and was not prompted by concerns, but aimed to gather independent feedback on residents’ experiences and quality of life.
Lifeways Community Care is a purpose-built home supporting adults with learning disabilities, with four en‑suite bedrooms, shared wet-room facilities, ceiling track hoists, and spacious communal and garden areas. The home is well located, with access to local amenities, transport links and leisure opportunities, which residents regularly use.
Two residents completed the survey and both reported that they were treated well, felt safe, and were happy with the care and support they received. They described enjoying having their own bedrooms, listening to music, participating in activities such as Arts 4 Wellbeing sessions, shopping trips and football matches, and being offered opportunities to take part in activities even if they chose not to engage.
Both residents said they were involved in their own care planning and did not want any changes to their care, indicating satisfaction and a sense of stability. One resident noted they had been living at the home for nearly a year and wanted things to remain the same.
One relative or friend also completed a survey and responded positively to all questions, stating that their relative was treated with dignity and respect, felt safe, had their needs met, and that they themselves were involved in care planning. They also indicated that any concerns or complaints would be dealt with appropriately and that they were overall happy with the care provided, although no additional comments were made.
Key observations from Healthwatch noted that the home was spacious, clean, and homely, with a newly fitted kitchen and accessible outdoor space. Bedrooms were personalised with staff support, and residents were actively asked about activities and preferences, supporting choice and independence.
Overall, the findings show that residents and families had very positive experiences at Lifeways Community Care, with no areas for improvement identified through the surveys. The provider welcomed the Healthwatch visit, describing it as supportive and engaging, and emphasised the value of partnership working and resident voice in helping people reach their full potential.
