Summary of report content

On 30th March 2019, authorised representatives from Healthwatch Bucks undertook an unscheduled Enter and View visit to the Leonard Pulham Home, who were given up to 2 weeks’ notice of the visit but not the time and date. The home provided nursing care for 28 people some of whom live with dementia.

The findings of the report show that not everyone at the Home was satisfied with the level of care given; there was frequent staff change which made it difficult for residents to bond with people. Staff levels were low and not all staff respected residents as individuals. The home offered a good choice of food, but some residents were not satisfied with the quality. The environment was homely, but some residents found it challenging to get a quick response; however, residents were satisfied with the privacy levels. There were numerous activities available all the time, including visits out into the community.

The report recommended to ensure all staff are trained in person-centred care and supported to put it into practice; improve staff attitude and behaviour towards residents; put up pictorial signs to differentiate one corridor from another and a toilet door from a bedroom door.

The providers responded by saying they had booked staff for Person Centred Care course; were improving the signage of the home; were monitoring the call bell system more regularly and adopting a menu to reflect the choice of the residents.
