Healthwatch Leicester and Healthwatch Leicestershire visited Leicester Royal Infirmary on 11 September 2024 to gather patient views of the service, observe the facilities and operation, and observe the experiences of patients with learning disabilities during their time on the wards. During the visit, Healthwatch Leicester and Healthwatch Leicestershire collected feedback from 5 patients (with help from carers), and an unspecified number of hospital staff.
The report includes feedback and observations on access and navigation, ward facilities, patient support, and accessibility. Staff feedback highlighted challenges in providing personalised care due to time constraints and a lack of awareness around purpose of care bags meant for patients with learning disabilities. Patient and carer feedback noted dissatisfaction with communication and limited overnight stay options. Patients/carers also requested more patient activities and improved support facilities.
The report contains 4 recommendations. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust responded to the report.
