Healthwatch Bolton undertook an Enter and View visit to Knightswood Care Home on 28 April 2016.
The visit found that the home provided a clean, calm and homely environment where residents generally felt comfortable, safe and well cared for. Residents spoke positively about staff, describing them as friendly and respectful, and Healthwatch observed regular and positive interactions between staff and residents. Residents were satisfied with their personal care, felt their dignity was respected and said they were happy with the food provided.
The home offered a range of activities, including games, indoor bowling, exercise sessions, hair and beauty treatments, church attendance and days out. Staff reported that they were encouraged to spend time getting to know residents and understanding their individual preferences and life histories. Residents were able to make choices about aspects of daily life, such as when to get up or go to bed, and personalised care was supported through key worker arrangements and ongoing staff training.
Healthwatch Bolton concluded that the home was operating to a very good standard with regard to dignity and respect. Recommendations included exploring the provision of a dedicated staff rest area, discussing the timing of GP visits to minimise disruption to mealtimes and seeking clarification about access to patient transport services. The report also highlighted good relationships between residents and staff, positive feedback from relatives and a well-maintained environment with opportunities for social inclusion and independence.
