On 27th January 2020, Healthwatch Sandwell undertook an enter and view visit to Horsley Health Medical Centre. The purpose of the visit was to share good practice in service delivery within the Sandwell borough. Horsley Health Medical Centre is a GP surgery open weekday from 8:30 to 7:00 pm. Extended hour services our available on weekdays to 8:00 pm and on weekend mornings.
Healthwatch staff found got the surgery was clean, tidy and well maintained. There was a variety of information on the notice boards including information about the practice, the nurses, the patient participation group, health awareness, interpreter service and safeguarding. Majority of the patients they spoke to said that it was easy to get an appointment when they needed one; they could use online booking system to make an appointment; If they could not get an appointment, they either would go to the walk-in centre or wait for an appointment to become available; all the patients stated that they were happy with the service they received from the surgery and those that required a medication review, always received one. Patients felt that the surgery could be further improved by having more staff and advance appointments; onsite blood tests and a larger waiting area would also help improve their experiences.
The report made five recommendations which included a timetable of what doctors are available, availability of more appointments, access to onsite blood tests, promotion of patient participation group and for the surgery to continue encourage patient feedback. There was no response from the providers.
