Healthwatch Warwickshire undertook an Enter and View visit to Guys Cross Nursing Home on 20 May 2026 found the service to be a well-maintained, calm, and supportive environment providing long-term care for 34 people with complex and enduring mental health conditions.
The home is organised into four small, household-style living areas where residents are grouped according to compatibility and interests, which helps to create a homely, family-like atmosphere.
Leadership at the home was identified as a significant strength, with an experienced Registered Manager and a stable staff team who demonstrated strong knowledge of mental health conditions and a commitment to person-centred care.
Staff interactions with residents were consistently kind, respectful, and patient, and residents appeared safe, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the visit.
The home showed particular strengths in collaborative care planning, continuity of staff, and innovative approaches to supporting people with complex mental health needs, including a strong emphasis on de-escalation and avoiding the use of restraint.
Staff training was highlighted as a key factor in maintaining high-quality care, with the service holding specialist accreditation and reporting no use of physical restraint in the past year.
The physical environment was found to be clean, well-maintained, and suitable for residents’ needs, with good communal spaces and access to outdoor areas.
Residents were observed engaging positively with staff and each other; however, overall activity levels were low, and residents were not often involved in daily living tasks such as cooking or cleaning.
The main recommendation from the visit was to encourage greater resident participation in everyday activities and self-care to promote independence and wellbeing.
Additional recommendations included sharing good practice more widely and developing links with similar services to support learning and improvement.
Overall, the report concludes that Guys Cross Nursing Home provides a high standard of compassionate, specialist care, with opportunities to further enhance residents’ independence through increased engagement in daily activities.
