Summary of report content

Healthwatch North Lincolnshire undertook an Enter and View visit to The Grange Intermediate Care and Rehabilitation Unit on 6 May 2026.

The visit found that The Grange provided a clean, safe and welcoming environment for people receiving rehabilitation support while awaiting transfer to further rehabilitation services or returning home. Patients were very positive about the care they received and described staff as kind, caring, approachable and responsive. Healthwatch observed strong leadership, positive relationships between staff and patients, good infection control practices and effective collaboration with external healthcare professionals. Patients felt safe and reported that staff responded quickly when support was needed.

The report identified several areas for improvement. Patients felt there were not enough activities and rehabilitation opportunities available during their stay, and some said they did not see therapy staff often enough while waiting to transfer to Sir John Mason House. Feedback on food was mixed, and some patients reported feeling lonely. Healthwatch also noted that outdoor spaces were underused and could better support wellbeing and rehabilitation, while welcome information, menus and staff identification could be made more accessible.

Healthwatch North Lincolnshire concluded that The Grange delivers person-centred care in a supportive environment and highlighted responsive staff, visible leadership, cleanliness and strong governance as examples of good practice. Recommendations included improving patient information, enhancing outdoor and activity spaces, reviewing therapy provision for patients awaiting transfer, improving menu accessibility and continuing environmental improvements to the building and grounds. The provider accepted the recommendations and outlined actions to address them, including appointing an Activities Coordinator and continuing ongoing improvements to the environment and patient experience.
