Summary of report content

Healthwatch Staffordshire conducted an Enter and View visit on Rowan Court Care Home, a nursing home with 76 places caring for adults, on 14th July 2017.

The purpose of the visit was to follow up on the findings of a previous Healthwatch visit made in November 2016 which had found issues relating to risks to individual safety being managed poorly, insufficient staffing levels and dignity being compromised. It was also noted that a CQC report published in March 2017 rated the home as inadequate and placed it in special measures – the rating was changed to “Requires Improvement” and taken out of special measures following a further CQC visit in May 2017.

The Enter and View representatives reported:

- staffing levels have been increased;

- agency staff are only used occasionally;

- staff have been trained on dealing with challenging behaviour and dementia;

- all falls are logged and reported to the Falls team;

- medicine management of tropical creams has been improved through training and the use of charts for administration of creams;

- the provider stated that other issues have been addressed including: strong urine smell, staff shortages, reading of care plans, Mental Capacity Act training, updating DoLS assessments;

- the Activity room has been refurbished and decluttered.

The report made no recommendations.

The provider did not provide a response.
