Healthwatch East Sussex conducted a series of Enter and View visits to eight extra care services in East Sussex during October 2018 and March 2019. They engaged with a total of 101 people who live in the extra care schemes.
There was mixed feedback about the care and support people received as although they were deemed friendly and helpful, there were also reports about being rushed. The majority of people reported that they thought they had no choice about where to get their care and support. People told the representatives that they have no problems getting access to health and social care service. The residents were positive about their accommodation including that they appreciated their independence and were reassured that care was on hand at all times. Issues have been encountered when people have been discharged from hospital.
Healthwatch East Sussex put together an action plan for providers and commissioners involving setting up residents' committees, reviewing funding to include activities, clarifying eligibility criteria, assisting with transport to local services, and ensuring that staff are involved in the discharge from hospital process.
