Two authorised representatives from Healthwatch Buckinghamshire (HWB) conducted an Enter and View on Austenwood Care Home, a privately owned care home with 35 places on 18 October 2017.
The visit was arranged as part of HWB’s unscheduled Enter and View process – the home had up to two weeks’ notice of the visit but did not know the time or date it was due to take place.
Observations by the Enter and View representatives reported that: staff interacted well on a personal and professional level with everyone in the home and residents were offered much choice and their decisions respected.
The representatives talked to 5 residents, 1 staff member, 4 visitors and observed several other residents, visitors and staff.
Recommendations included: the home make the blackboard daily menu clearer with a larger print so they are easier to read; continue to develop the i-pad pictorial menu for those who would rather choose menu options via pictures and to post an activity timetable on the noticeboard.
The service provider response acknowledged the report with pride and confirmed that there was an activity timetable available with social activity being a responsibility of all members of staff. The recommendations about the daily menu were taken on board and developments about pictorial menu were explained.
