Healthwatch Cheshire West conducted an Enter and View visit to the Discharge Lounge in the Countess of Chester Hospital on the 15 January 2014.
The report notes that the Countess is a Foundation Trust Hospital covering the Chester and Ellesmere Port area. The hospital also caters for certain admissions and elective surgery for patients from North Wales and the Wirral areas. The discharge lounge is located in an area near the main reception area of the hospital and designated for the use of patients about to leave hospital.
Authorized Representatives felt that the area had a regimented feel with chairs all positioned around the outside of the room. Staff were approachable, welcoming and appeared efficient. The room itself appeared quite small for the purpose with a very clinical feel.
The recommendations made were that a larger area would be more appropriate, a different arrangement of chairs to give some informality and having either TV on subtitle only or television or radio broadcast as both could be heard during the visit.
There was no provider response included in the report.
