Healthwatch Shropshire conducted and Enter and View visit to Coton Hill House Care Home on 29th April 2019. The purpose of this visit was to make observations of the home environment and interactions between staff, residents and their families, to understand the home's approach to providing 'person centred' care, and to hear about how staff support residents to maintain their independence.
Healthwatch Shropshire focused on the home environment, how the home provides 'person-centred' care and Dementia care, and the support available to staff. They first spent some time with the Manager, who showed them around the home. Healthwatch spoke to the activities coordinator, 4 care assistants, 2 kitchen staff, 4 residents and 1 relative.
They found the home had a calm, peaceful atmosphere and the residents looked well-cared for. The staff worked with the residents effectively and with care. Whilst the majority of the home reflected best practice in Dementia care, there were some areas for improvement. Residents were supported to make their own choices, and had a selection of different activities.
Healthwatch made several recommendations relating to taking extra steps in Dementia care and updating worn decor. This report contains a service provider response.
