Healthwatch Coventry carried out an enter and view visit to Grove House Care Home on 23 August 2016 to gather information about residents' experiences of living in the home and to assess quality of life, care and support. During the visit, Healthwatch spoke with eight residents, four members of staff, two visitors and received one completed visitor questionnaire. At the time of the visit, 22 residents were living in the home.
Healthwatch found Grove House to be a homely, friendly and clean care home with a relaxed atmosphere. Residents generally appeared happy and comfortable, and visitors praised the quality of care provided. Staff were observed interacting positively with residents, treating them with dignity and respect, and visitors described staff as caring, approachable and attentive. Residents were generally satisfied with the food, care and overall environment.
Some areas for improvement were identified. Several residents and visitors felt there were not enough organised activities or opportunities for outings, although some residents preferred spending time independently. Healthwatch also noted that signage was not dementia-friendly or always clear, particularly around toilets, fire exits and changes in floor levels. Concerns were raised about staff smoking near residents in the garden, and one resident reported dissatisfaction with the care received from night staff, although feedback about daytime staff was overwhelmingly positive.
Healthwatch recommended improving signage throughout the home, reducing reliance on agency staff, strengthening continuity of care during night shifts, expanding activities and day trips, and ensuring smoking takes place away from residents. Overall, the report concluded that Grove House provided a caring and welcoming environment, with residents and visitors expressing high levels of satisfaction with the home and its staff.
