In April 2018, Healthwatch Bucks carried out an enter and view visit to Chilterns Manor, a privately owned care home. Chilterns Manor currently provides residential care for 17 people; the majority living with various degrees of dementia.
Representatives talked to 9 residents, 3 members of staff, (plus the Manager and briefly the Deputy Manager). They also observed 1 visiting optician, another 3 residents and 1 additional staff member. The conversations and observations were focused on: how people are treated, personal choice, homeliness, privacy and quality of life.
The report concludes that many residents expressed satisfaction with the care received and life at the home, the quality of food was praised but no written or pictorial menus were seen; and there are good intentions and new initiatives have started to improve the home e.g. The Dignity Champions, but staff need to ensure they put this into practice.
The report makes 5 recommendations, which include adding photos to the menu to aid residents in choosing meals independently, organizing dementia care training for staff and making cold refreshments available to residents in lounges.
The report contains a response from the provider, addressing the recommendations and pledging to action suggestions.
